The service was set up to help vulnerable people in the community who were experiencing difficulty preparing and cooking a main meal for themselves. Depending on the needs, service users can avail of the service Monday to Friday. Some clients may require fewer days. The service is particularly helpful to older people living alone or people with a disability.

The service is based in Ballymun and the area’s covered are Drumcondra, Iona, and Marino.

The meals are sourced from Kare Social Services. They are based in Marewood Food Kitchen in Ballymun. The meals are prepared and cooked in this kitchen daily by a professional chef. Particular attention is paid to clients with special dietary requirements. This information is passed on to the kitchen staff by the Co-Ordinator of the Meals on Wheels service.

The meal consists of two-courses, dinner and dessert.

Referrals to the service are accepted from the Public Health Nurse, Hospital Staff and Home Help Service. Any other enquiries are directed back to the Public Health Nurse in the Community.

Meals are collected from the kitchen each morning, the Co-Ordinator of the service oversees this process, the meals are then delivered to the clients by volunteer drivers and in some cases one helper.

All volunteers must complete a Garda clearance form. This is a mandatory requirement.
